The creative process for me, begins with my desire to connect with the sense of wonder and beauty that I experience in Nature. My process is a vehicle for gathering knowledge and understanding, and provides a mental and emotional structure for my inspiration.

My artwork serves as a mirror that reflects both the familiar and the unknown; the exploration of these two worlds and the connection points between them is what touch me. For me, it is not the finished artwork that is most important, but the process, and that which cannot be expressed or communicated in other ways.

I have lived and worked in Amsterdam since 1978. I grew up in the USA, my family moved frequently but every summer we returned to my grandparents’ cabin by a river in the mountains of Colorado. This paradise formed my love and experience of Nature, and created the foundation of my work.

Activities 2010

Artist in residence
In January I will be an artist in residence on board the Oasis of the Seas, the newest and largest cruise ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet. My work is represented in their collection that is one of the largest private art collections in the world. In 2005 I created a photographic installation in the central staircase of the Serenade of the Seas. For the Art Actual Gallery on board the Oasis I have made an exclusive edition of photographs of white roses behind blue glass.

Works in progress: In my studio in Amsterdam I am working on several ongoing photographic series.
-THE CAUSE OF ALL THINGS
A series inspired by a text from the Greek philosopher Dionysius written in 3 AD.
-WHITE
A series of black and white photographs of white things; an ode to PURITY.
-THE SCHOLARS GARDEN
An installation inspired by the ancient Chinese Scholar’s Garden; a landscaped environment where nature was contemplated for the purpose of calming the mind and cultivating virtues such as clarity and awareness.
